JP Morgan Chase & Co 101

Welcome to my blog where I will be discussing JP Morgan over the coming weeks! Here is a brief introduction to the bank, from its beginnings to its current status as a global powerhouse. Follow along for insights and analysis on all things JP Morgan! 

JP Morgan Chase & Co was founded December 31st 2000, when JP Morgan & Co incorporated with the Chase Manhattan Corporation. It operates in more than 100 countries and has $2.6 trillion in assets (JPMorgan, 2023). Headquartered in New York City, JP Morgan Chase has developed into a world leader in investment banking, commercial banking, financial transaction processing and asset management.

Considered one of the world’s most systemically important bank according to the rankings from the G20’s Financial Stability Board late last year (Reuters, 2022). A multinational investment bank and financial services company that was named after John Pierpont Morgan, a prominent American financier, who founded JP Morgan & Co in 1871. Many mergers over the years have abetted the bank which we see today, notably their merger with Bank One in 2004 and Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual in 2008.  

JP Morgan refers to the overall firm, responsible for the investment banking, wealth management and private banking. While Chase is responsible for commercial retail, retail banking and card services for everyday consumers (WSO, 2010). Chase revenue comes from 4 operational segments: Consumer and Community Banking (CCB), Corporate and Investment Bank (CIB), Commercial Banking (CB) and Asset and Wealth Management (AWM). It serves a diverse range of clients, including individuals, corporations, governments and institutions. In addition to its financial operations, JP Morgan Chase is also known for its philanthropic efforts, including its support for education, healthcare and community development initiatives. For the purpose of my research blog, I intend on exploring this further with regards to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. 

 

In my blog, I will cover the most recent developments from JP Morgan, one of the top financial services corporations in the world, news and efforts relating to sustainability in the financial sector. I will keep you informed of all the significant developments about sustainability and finance, from the company's commitment to lowering its carbon footprint to its investment in sustainable initiatives and involvement in international coalitions. I'll also talk about current financial problems and how JP Morgan has been impacted by them. Navigating Inflation

Inflation, a curse of developed economies during the 1970s and 1980s, was an economic malady remembered largely by Central Bankers in recent decades as the world’s leading economies basked in a low interest rate environment. This convenient climate for investment shattered in the last eighteen months.  Given the current prominence of inflation as a topic of concern t his blog post provides a snapshot of this rise in prices, action to reign back inflation and consequences for the banking sector, including JP Morgan.  According to the World Bank's newest Global Economic Prospects report, global growth is slowing rapidly due to soaring inflation, higher interest rates, less investment and disruption from Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
